Lymphedema

Lymphedema is the abnormal accumulation of proteins and lymphatic fluid beneath the skin with chronic inflammation and fibrosis.  It can occur in an arm or leg but can also affect the head and neck, breast, trunk or genitals.  Lymphedema usually develops when lymph vessels are damaged or lymph nodes are removed (secondary lymphedema - occurs following cancer surgeries/lymph node dissection, radiation, traumatic injury, surgery) but can also be present when lymphatic vessels are missing or impaired due to a hereditary condition (primary lymphedema).    Certified lymphedema therapists are also able to treat patients with edema following surgery, injury, or venous insufficiency/varicose veins.

We specialize in gold standard rehabilitation to treat both lymphedema and edema. Through patient education, comprehensive decongestive therapy, compression bandaging or compression garment recommendations, and specific exercise instruction, certified lymphedema therapists can help patients and their caregivers learn to manage their condition.

Oncology Rehabilitation:  Additionally, we can help patients deal with some of the debilitating side effects of their cancer treatments by restoring flexibility, strength, balance, and conditioning while learning strategies to manage joint pain, weight gain and cardiovascular sequelae.

Who to Refer:

Patients with a history of any of the following may be at risk for developing lymphedema:

  • Primary Lymphedema

One of the most common causes of vertigo is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV).  This dizziness is typically provoked by bending over, looking up, rolling over in bed, getting in/out of bed and quick head movements.
