Joel Johnson, PT, OCS

Joel has been a licensed Physical Therapist since 1982, specializing in the treatment of orthopedic conditions and sports injuries.  His knowledge and experience gets you back to an active lifestyle as soon as possible.  Joel truly enjoys helping you return to what you enjoy in life.

Joel and his wife Nancy founded Renton Sports and Spine Physical Therapy (RSSPT) in 2001 to provide the highest quality of care, service and personal attention in a comfortable and supportive atmosphere!  It is their goal is to deliver effective care to you first and foremost. Whether you are recovering from a knee injury, a shoulder replacement, a sports injury, or an ankle problem, you can be assured that Joel’s personal attention and physical therapy services will surpass your expectations in a fun environment!

Having earned his Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (O.C.S.) certification places Joel is in a small number of Physical Therapists holding this distinction.  He has special interests in treatment of sports injuries along with foot and ankle conditions.  He is certified in ASTYM, and has a broad Manual Therapy background including NAIOMT, Norwegian, Mulligan and McConnell approaches.  Joel is an active member of the Physical Therapy Association of Washington, the American Physical Therapy Association, and Physical Therapists in Private Practice in Washington.

The father of three, Joel is a member of the Auburn School District Sports Medicine Advisory Committee and Auburn Chamber of Commerce. A Washington native, Joel enjoys spending time with his family, skiing, boating, wakeboarding, wakesurfing and Husky football.

Jeannette Whitefield, PT, DPT, CSCS

Jeannette graduated from the University of Puget Sound in 2015 with her Doctorate of Physical Therapy.

 

Prior to that, she attended Western Washington University where she received her undergraduate degree in Exercise Science-Kinesiology. With her interest in sports rehab and emphasis on an active and healthy lifestyle, Jeannette also studied to become a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.

Jeannette is excited to be working at Auburn Sports Physical Therapy, where she is dedicated to providing her patients the tools they need to return to the active lifestyles they were living prior to injury.

In her spare time, Jeannette enjoys hiking, camping, traveling, and of course, cheering on the sports teams of Seattle.

Megan Hamrick, PTA

Megan earned her Applied Associates of Science Degree as a Physical Therapist Assistant through Green River Community College in 2004. 

 

Since graduation, Megan has worked primarily in outpatient orthopedics, including Renton Sports & Spine Physical Therapy, before coming to Auburn Sports Physical Therapy.  These experiences have allowed her to treat a wide variety of conditions, including neurological disorders, post-surgical, chronic pain conditions, motor vehicle injuries, total joint replacements and sports injuries. 

 

Megan has taken a multitude of continuing education classes to advance her skills and stay currrent, including ACL injury prevention & treatment through Sportsmetrics, Stott Pilates, ASTYM, and Selective Functional Movement Assessment. 

 

Megan is passionate about treating the whole person, and improving their quality of movement and function.                          

 

In her spare time, Megan stays active with running, hiking, biking and participating in triathlons.  She also enjoys gardening, reading, baking and, most of all, spending time with her family, two sons and husband.

Kay Compher, PT, CLT

Kay graduated from the University of Puget Sound with her Master's degree in Physical Therapy in 1994. For ten years, her specialty was neurological rehabilitation and was followed by experiences working in administration, home care and outpatient settings.

 

An introduction to lymphedema and oncology rehabilitation while in PT school ignited Kay's interests and in 2008, she received her certification as a lymphedema therapist from the Norton School of Lymphatic Therapy.Through complete decongestive therapy--including manual lymphatic drainage massage, compression bandaging and patient education--Kay works with individuals to independently manage their lymphedema, and help them to regain functional mobility, strength, endurance and balance. 

 

She also works with patients' families and caregivers during active treatments for cancer, radiation and chemotherapy.

In addition to treating primary and secondary forms of lymphedema, she also has expertise in treating vascular, post surgical and traumatic forms of swelling.

When not at work, Kay enjoys cooking, baking and trying new recipes, volunteering in her community and her son's school, traveling, flyball and gardening. She also works to keep up with her active husband, son and their three dogs.

Barbara Curtis, PT

Barbara received her physical therapy degree from the University of Puget Sound in 1989.  A former track athlete at the University of Washington prior to PT school, Barb became interested in PT as she was surrounded by collegiate athletes from many different sports recovering from injury. 

 

Barb specializes in the evaluation and treatment of orthopedic conditions and injuries, and enjoys working with a diverse population of patients of all ages and activity levels.

 

She is fascinated by the process of evaluating a patient and developing and implementing a comprehensive plan of care geared toward each individual’s functional goals. 

 

Utilizing manual therapy, education, and exercise with a special emphasis on core stabilization and restoring muscle balance and optimal movement patterns, Barb strives to help each patient reach their highest level of function.  She is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and the Physical Therapy Association of Washington. She is also ASTYM certified.

 

A Seattle area native and mother of two, Barb enjoys spending time with her family, as well as photography, music, theater, and going for walks and hikes. She loves to spend time outdoors, enjoying the beauty of the Pacific Northwest.

Melissa Becker, PTA

Melissa earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology from Western Washington University in 2013, and finished the Physical Therapist Assistant program at Whatcom Community College in 2016.

 

Melissa has previously worked as an aide at our Lakeland clinic and is happy to be continuing as a PTA with Renton Sports and Spine.  

Melissa was a collegiate softball player at WWU, and continues to find a passion for athletics.

 

During her time at Western she worked in the athletic training room, where she found her love for rehab and return to sport for a wide variety of athletes. She is excited to work alongside our highly trained physical therapists at Renton Sports and Spine and Auburn Sports Physical Therapy in order to achieve your personal goals for rehab and getting you back to your active lifestyle. Melissa is also ASTYM certified. 

In her free time Melissa continues to stay active with running, hiking, soccer and softball as well as spending time with her family and 2 dogs, Dash and Rori. Melissa is also a huge fan of the Seattle Mariners. 

Denise Hayes 
PT, DPT, OCS

Denise is a Washington native who has been a licensed Physical Therapist since 2002 when she graduated from the University of Washington.  She also has received her transitional Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2011 from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota.  She specializes in treating orthopedic conditions as well as dizziness, vertigo, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), and other problems of the vestibular system.   

 

Denise became a Board Certified Orthopedic Physical Therapist (OCS) in 2013.  This additional certification has allowed her to become more efficient in treating her patients and getting the desired results quickly for both her orthopedic and vestibular patients.  She enjoys teaching her patients about their conditions and works to make her explanations of their conditions easy to understand. Denise is also ASTYM certified.

 

At home, she and her husband are working hard at raising two boys into gentlemen.  She enjoys having time with her family, teaching in the community, cooking in her kitchen, playing guitar, sea kayaking, and volunteering with several local groups.

Brandi Eloff, PT, DPT,
Clinic Director

Brandi graduated from Eastern Washington University in 2015 with her Doctorate of Physical Therapy. Prior to that, she attended the University of Great Falls where she finished her undergraduate degree in Biology, which she began at Clark College.

 

She is enjoying her role as Clinic Director at Lakeland, and is working towards becoming a Board Certified Orthopedic Specialist (OCS) and a Certified Manual Physical Therapist (CMPT) to maximize her skills as a Physical Therapist. Additionally, she is ASTYM certified.

 

Brandi’s approach to treating patients is a combination of manual techniques, functional exercise and education to enhance outcomes in the rehabilitation process. Her goals are the same as her patients’: to return them to their active lifestyles prior to injury.

 

In her spare time, Brandi’s passion is running, which stems from her years of competing in collegiate cross country and track. She also enjoys rock climbing, snowboarding, hiking and wakesurfing. She and her husband, Brandon, live in Lakeland Hills with their two mini Australian Shepherds, Kam and Antonio, who accompany them on their adventures.

Hailey Hooper,
PT, DPT

Hailey graduated from West Coast University in Los Angeles in 2017 with her Doctorate in Physical Therapy.  Prior to that she earned her undergraduate degree in Biology, Option in Physiology with a minor in Chemistry from California State University, Long Beach.

Hailey is excited to be a part of the Lakeland Sports and Spine Physical Therapy team.  She specializes in working with patients of all ages with a variety of orthopedic injuries and developing a plan of care tailored to the individual needs/desires of each patient.

Hailey and her husband, Matt, moved from Southern California to Washington in June 2018 and welcomed a new baby boy, Lincoln, to the family in February 2019.  She enjoys traveling, hiking, baking, riding her bike at the beach, and going to Angels baseball games.

Jessica French, PTA

Jessica began her career in Physical Therapy working as an aide at our sister clinic, Auburn Sports Physical Therapy.

 

She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Puget Sound in 2008, and is a 2013 graduate of the Physical Therapist Assistant program at Green River Community College.

 

She is excited to return to the company and begin her career as a PTA.

 

Jessica is a retired, state champion gymnast, and it was through this sport that she found a passion for Physical Therapy. She works in a team approach with each Physical Therapist to implement a program to help you overcome your injury and return you to a healthy lifestyle.

 

Jessica is also ASTYM certified.

 

Jessica enjoys being a newlywed with her new husband Dan, and has a passion for traveling, cooking and a love for movie quotes.

Stephanie Gaspar, MSc,
BSc, CSMS, CES, LMP

Steph graduated from Seattle Massage School with academic honors and was selected to intern at Tacoma General Hospital with primary concentrations in Oncology and Pre- and Neonatal. With strong ambitions to integrate therapy into the athletic training protocols of major league baseball, she secured a position within the medical staff for the Seattle Mariners while completing undergraduate science studies in pre-medicine and health psychology at Bastyr University.

 

Steph has worked with six additional professional sports teams and has successfully completed educational pursuits including strength training, corrective exercise, emergency medicine/triage and mass casualty incidents, continuing education in sports medicine from Harvard Medical School and a graduate degree of science in criminal justice with a specialization in forensics – all of which have prepared her for a grounded knowledge in the rehabilitative sciences and applicable modalities to ensure the best possible care for each patient.

In her spare time, Steph is active in the community by volunteering with the Special Olympics, Back the Blue, the Wounded Warrior Project, Camp Promise-West, the Hand Up Project and various other organizations. An active hiker and runner, she adores adventures with her family, both in Washington and New England.

Nancy Johnson, PT,
Clinic Owner

Nancy earned her bachelor’s degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Puget Sound. She has practiced physical therapy for more than 27 years in a variety of settings, including neurological rehabilitation, skilled nursing and orthopedics. For the last 9 years, she has practiced in orthopedics, utilizing her advanced training in manual skills to maximize her patients’ abilities and function.

 

Her passion for physical therapy is evident in returning her patients back to full function, so that they may live their lives to their maximum abilities. 

 

Nancy teaches and trains the patient to utilize exercise in addition to their skilled PT intervention, to maximize their function in daily activities of work and recreation. 

 

She is certified in ASTYM and has had hundreds of hours of continuing education to keep her skills up to date and progressive.

 

Nancy is also involved in the community of Auburn through such groups as Rotary of Auburn, Auburn Young Life, Reality Sports, Community in Schools, and has been active in the past in PTA and youth sports coaching. 

 

She and her husband have raised their three children in Auburn while enjoying, hiking, skiing, and boating activities.

 

Professional organizations include the Washington State PT Association, American Physical Therapy Association, and Physical Therapists in Private Practice in Washington State. 

 

In December of 2014, Nancy retired from her job as a physical therapist, due to the effects of Early Onset Alzheimer's Disease. Although her daily presence is missed, she is still very active in the clinic and community, and will occasionally stop in for a quick hello!
